Hello Summer Break!

>> Saturday, March 26, 2011

I am particularly excited about my daughter’s summer break this year as we will be spending it together. Twenty-four hours. Seven days a week. For two long months. We have travel plans but in between those trips, and unlike her previous summer vacations, there will be no summer workshops or classes to attend. It’s just me and her during the weekdays – shopping, dining out or fighting over something! Hahaha! Seriously though, I need to do some general cleaning and maybe invest on a good home dehumidifier since we’ll be home most of the time and we do not want any allergy attack to ruin a perfect summer break.

To make this a productive period, I thought that this is the perfect time to teach and train her to do some household chores. She has been assigned to wash our dishes every now and then but she needs to learn more, right?

Yesterday morning,  we began the day by doing the laundry together. We eventually discovered her forte and that’s the spin dryer. I guess that made her enjoy the task that she is actually looking forward to our next laundry day.

Late afternoon, we had and early dinner at our favorite restaurant. It’s a pity that her Dad was not around to join us but we have a separate family date very soon. Afterward, we proceeded to the mall to buy her summer shoes and dresses. She was complaining about being too full that we had to go home earlier than planned.

This morning, we colored her toe nails with gray and glittery blue. Alternately. I can’t wait until her Dad sees them!

Anyway, I am looking forward to our first summer break weekend as a family. I hope you will have a great one too!

Web Hosting Help

>> Friday, March 25, 2011

Have you been planning on doing something and yet you keep on putting them off? Do you have one thing on your to-do list that has been sitting there for months, just waiting for you to finally take the courage and accomplish it? Well I have one and my friends can testify that I have been telling them about it since late last year. I have added more blogs under my name and it has been my plan to find a reliable webhosting company to host them. I did some initial research to find one and I chanced upon webhostingfan.com where I found detailed information regarding the best web hosting providers in the world.

Aside from the rank, price and hosting features, the site also provides web hosting reviews made by the users/ subscribers. I find the website very helpful, especially for persons like me who has limited knowledge when it comes to web hosting. There is a Web Hosting FAQ to know if you wish to learn more about web hosting.

Thanks to this website, I have finally chosen a webhosting provider. Upon my return from a trip next month, I am hoping that I can finalize everything. Wish me luck!

Free Emoticons App for iPhones and iTouch

Free Emoji on iTunesI have noticed that my friend, Jhari, has been using emoticons on her Twitter and Instagram posts for some time now. I have not asked her where or how she got it. I assumed it was a default iPhone feature or something. It is good that Joy asked her about it. Apparently, she is using Emoji, an application on iTunes. I looked and found Emoji Enabler Free by Thomas Huntington.

Description:

Emoji Enabler allows you to type more than 460 beautiful emoticons anywhere that you can use your iPhone's normal keyboard. Add personality to emails, text messages, notes, and more with Emoji Enabler, and have fun in the process. And you get it all for free!

Ordinateurs de Bureau?

That is my girl doing one of her many favorite things to do and that is reading. She has plenty of books both here and back at my parents’ house. We are thinking of shipping them here because she has been complaining about being bored with her current collection of books.

And the things she learn from her books! Last night, she asked me to buy Ordinateurs de bureau for her. I asked her what that means but she just laughed and told me to figure it out myself as she continued reading her illustrated French – English dictionary.

Thanks to an online translator, I finally learned what the phrase means so in reply, though a bit late, I told her that an Ordinateur de bureau has no room here because our place is very much occupied by her books, toys, art work and art materials. Aside from that, she can always borrow and play on my netbook so a desktop is not necessary. She just gave me her widest smile and I take it as a confirmation that my answer are satisfactory because:

  1. I took time to know what the term she uttered meant and more importantly,

  2. I said what she wants to hear – that she can borrow my netbook and play her online games there.

Oh this kid never fails to amaze and amuse me!

Being a cat person, I find this photo stinkin’ cute!

http://imgfave.com/

I’ve been bugging my husband to buy me a cuddly cat but obviously, I have not been successful at convincing him. According to him, aside from care and grooming can be expensive, looking after a pet can be difficult every time we travel (though that does not happen a lot). And we don’t even have our own place YET. So yes, a cat can certainly wait. :)

So anyway, I just have to be contented with photos like this one and playing with Auntie Cora’s dog, Chu-Chu, which we did last weekend. We, the humans and the canine had sooo much fun and I can’t wait to see the little darling again!

A Weekend with Grandma, Aunts, Cousins and a Dog

>> Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Our Sunday last weekend was spent over at an aunt’s house. My husband’s grandmother also lives there and we both had fun listening to her stories about her past and present. On the other hand, our daughter spend the morning following Auntie Rose around the kitchen. We all enjoyed a hefty meal composed of salad, sautéed vegetables with shrimps and fried catfish (my favorite!). For dessert, we had fresh fruits.

After lunch, I flipped through a new magazine that we bought that morning and was reading an long article about acne treatment that works before falling asleep on the sofa. I woke up seeing my husband was also asleep at the couch nearby. On the other hand, our daughter was enjoying some TV and computer time when we finally decided to collect her from the house next door where another aunt lives. We played with their dog and then left for home.

It was a restful and enjoyable day with them despite the scorching heat. And again, we are looking forward to another great weekend. As always.

Finding a Villa in Puerto Pollensa for a Romantic Getaway

It’s been a while since I last talked to a childhood friend of mine and I sure was glad when she buzzed me on instant messenger last night. She is now based in the UK and has been serving as a nurse for about a decade. We surely had a lot of catching up to do. And I learned about one of the major events that took place in her life recently, that is tying the knot with her long-time boyfriend. The wedding took place in a very nice church and it was attended by their family and very close friends. It was an intimate event and surely was memorable for the couple. She showed me their wedding photos and her gown was truly fabulous! She was indeed the most beautiful woman on her big day.

Another set of photos that she shared with me were those taken during their honeymoon. To get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and to enjoy their first weeks as a couple, they visited Spain and stayed in a very nice villa in Puerto Pollensa. With the help of Owners Direct, an online booking website for great villas and cottages, they found a cozy place where they stayed for two weeks. A colleague of hers who was able to find good Majorca villas some years back was the one who recommended Owners Direct to her. My friends shared how nice and friendly the owners of the villa were and they look forward to staying there in their future trips.

The old fashioned air that surrounds Puerto Pollensa is what seems to be attracting tourist from all over the world. The small natural beaches are perfect for taking dips which were surely enjoyed by my friend and her husband. They also had fun visiting shops, bars and fish restaurants.

It surely was a very enjoyable and memorable start for them as a couple and like all their friends, I wish that their marriage will be blessed and last a lifetime.

Oh, Bother.

I do not know what caused it, most probably the hormones plus the sweltering heat but I had one major migraine attack that lasted for more than 24 hours that began last Sunday. But that is not my major problem. I was also down by a very nasty stomach flu bug that made my husband come home from work after turning over some documents to his colleagues yesterday morning. With Mark (brother in-law #3), he bought me fruits, medicines, biscuits, arrozcaldo, Yakult, ice cream (I just had three spoons though) and two bottles of this:
I was feeling very weak yesterday but I did not take any medicine for my tummy problem. I just rehydrated, slept and ate what was allowed. I anticipated vomiting but it did not happen. The Husband was ready to bring me to the doctor. However, merely thinking of how hot it is outside and how I despise waiting in line while being sick, I asked him to just wait for another day and if I get worse, I will bring MYSELF to the doctor. His presence during trying times like this means a lot because you see, I am married to a very, very, verrrrry workaholic husband. Hehehe.

On the other hand, being someone who is usually doting over and caring for my two loves, it feels uncomfortable and uneasy to be the one being cared for and doted over this time. But then, I am but grateful and enjoying all the attention. Even the little girl makes sure that I drink my Gatorade and I rest well. She even allowed me to sleep in this morning. I am grateful for the my parents in-law too and Mark for making sure that the girl arrives to and from school on time.

Now, I need to recover and fast! There are many things to accomplish this week that I can’t afford to be sick for a very long time. I am happy to report though that I am way much better now. Hopefully, I can finish my to-do list before the week ends.

A Date with Roy

>> Friday, March 18, 2011

I feel very lucky to have friends who, despite distance, have never failed to make me feel that they are just around. What’s nicer though is having a chance to see them once in a while, exchange stories while enjoying good food (which is one vice I share with most of my friends) and just spend time together.

One such instance happened yesterday with an old friend of mine from the university. He was once a student leader during my stint as student affairs practitioner. We met at the mall yesterday for early lunch. We have placed our order when all of a sudden, an unexpected power outage took place. It’s a good thing that the mall has stand by honda generators so we did not have to eat our meal in darkness. Haha! After enjoying our lunch composed of pasta and pizza, we went around the mall to find a nice pair of sneakers and a jacket for him. Afterward, we proceeded to the bookstore where he bought a Paulo Coelho book and went home.

It feels good to touch base with an old friend again. He will be celebrating his birthday next month and we surely have planned to celebrate it somewhere. I can’t wait!

Summer Workshop for Kids

>> Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Just a week or so and summer break officially starts for us. For many parents and kids, it is the time not only to rest from the daily demands of school but to also do and learn fun things from summer workshops. It is good that there are many options to choose from. As a parent, one must assist his/ her children in choosing which summer workshop to join in order to make this summer not only fun but also productive. There are many options, depending on the interest of your child – sports, academic enrichment, arts and crafts, culinary and culture/ performing arts.

As a general rule, consider your child’s interest prior to enrolling him/ her to any summer workshops or classes. This will assure you that she will enjoy attending her classes and that she will hopefully finish it until the end, thus, your investment won’t go to waste. Moreover, find an age-appropriate class for your kids. We do not want our kids to force himself to perform in activities which are way beyond their capacities.

As parents, it is our duty to know the requirements of each class/ workshop where we enroll our kids. For a cooking workshop for example, it is important to know if the fee we have paid covers ingredients and cooking utensils or are the kids required to bring their own stuff.

Aside from honing their talents, summer workshops can also help in improving our children’s social skills. They get to meet kids from other schools and make friends. So make this summer more fun and memorable by finding a good summer workshop for your kid!

Hair Removal Tips for Men

>> Monday, March 14, 2011

They may not be very vocal about it but there are many men out there who are getting rid of their excess body hair. It has been a trend among men regardless of their age, profession, ethnic background and even sexual orientation.

While some men prefer to go to a professional like Urbana for Waxing Dublin for their hair removal procedures, others would like to take matters into their own hands and do the job themselves. Now if you’re a man planning to remove your unwanted hair, here are some useful tips:

  • Find yourself a good shaving cream or gel originally created for male body shaving.
  • Invest on a new quality razor with a pivoting head and multiple blades. This will give you a smooth, close shave. Do not forget to clean your razor thoroughly in between strokes.
  • Remember to exfoliate to get better results and minimize ingrown hair.
  • Use a drop or two of your shaving oil not only to moisturize but also prevent ingrown hair, razor burn and general irritation.
  • When shaving, use a firm touch and don’t go over the same area too many times to avoid skin irritation.
  • Remember to apply unscented lotion on the area you have just shaved.
  • To keep ingrown hair, razor bumps and skin irritation at bay, invest on an effective bump-fighting product.

Wednesday Happy Thoughts

>> Thursday, March 10, 2011

Happy Thoughts This should be renamed if I keep on doing it on a Thursday, don’t you think? Anyway, here’s the list:

  1. A date with one of my very close friends yesterday. We went to the mall, visited a park, took photos, posed for photos, had some ice drop by the swing, ate a late lunch that included an exotic entree, picked the girl up from her school, visited an old church, went for a long trip to eat noodles and dessert, shopped for books as her gifts to the girl and bid her goodbye.
  2. This stolen shot taken by my friend:
  3. A new recipe magazine from a local publisher. Someone is planning to try a dish or two in the coming weekends.
  4. A  leisure trip to the market this morning + breakfast at a place that I read about online.

  5. Cecelia Ahern and her books.

  6. Hopefully a restful weekend.

  7. New dresses for my girl and her cousins.

P.S. I Love You

>> Tuesday, March 8, 2011

I did myself a favor early this week by finding myself a good book. I began reading Cecelia Ahern’s If You Could See Me Now and I was able to finish it yesterday. I immediately followed it up with another of Ms. Ahern’s books – PS. I Love You. It’s her first book, actually, and based on what I have learned, it was (or is?) being made into a movie.

PS I Love You Cecelia Ahern
The synopsis:

Some people wait their whole lives to find their soul mates. But not Holly and Gerry.

Childhood sweethearts, they could finish each other's sentences and even when they fought, they laughed. No one could imagine Holly and Gerry without each other.

Until the unthinkable happens. Gerry's death devastates Holly. But as her 30th birthday looms, Gerry comes back to her. He's left her a bundle of notes, gently guiding Holly into her new life without him, each note signed "P.S. I Love You."

As the notes are gradually opened, and as the year unfolds, Holly is both cheered up and challenged. The man who knows her better than anyone sets out to teach her that life goes on. With some help from her friends, and her noisy and loving family, Holly finds herself laughing, crying, singing, dancing - and being braver than ever before.

Life is for living, she realizes - but it always helps if there's an angel watching over you.

Both are good reads and I am now looking for the next book to keep me preoccupied. Most likely, it will be one still by Ms. Ahern again.

Benefits of electrostimulation include: alleviation of some body pains, faster recovery after exertion, improvement of stamina and endurance, gaining of strength and speed, increase of muscle volume, improvement of blood circulation and abdominal muscles and many others.

However, it is not intended to replace physical strength training exercises. It is meant to complement existing sports training program. It only proves that there are no shortcuts in achieving best results.

Giant Rabbit Sculpture Made of Porcelain

I have always been amazed at the inventiveness of the human mind. It lets him improve his life and those of others. It is amazing what a person can do if he lets his mind imagine and his hands make it a reality. His inventiveness can even make him create extraordinary things out of the ordinary. Take the people of Jingdezhen City in China for example. They need not look any further to celebrate Chinese New Year early this year.

To welcome the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, the people of Jingdezhen made a giant statue of a rabbit using 30,000 porcelain plates. Jingdezhen is known as the porcelain city for 1,700 years now, thus, it makes perfect sense that the people of Jingdezhen use their centuries-old skill to commemorate the event. In order to create the giant rabbit sculpture, metal was used as the main frame of the structure which they covered with thousands of porcelain plates.

Porcelain Rabbit
We know that there are other stories out there that not only features ordinary things like kitchen utensils or even scraps which are being used to come up with new and impressive creations just like what the people of Jingdezhen in China did.
