The Downside of Travels and Vacations

>> Sunday, May 29, 2011

I have been at the university last week for some transactions. I also took some time to visit friends. It was great seeing them again though some were on a business or vacation trip. Hopefully, they will be back this weekend and I get to see them before my flight this week.

I also chanced upon some of the student leaders I worked with in the past. I do not know if one of them is just bluffing when she said that I have lost too much weight. She even asked if I have been taking some diet coffee, into aspire diet pills or some other diet drugs which are fad right now.

I told her that I have been facing some weight issues when summer began and we were on trips. I shared that dieting and mindful eating can be quite tough when I am on travel/ vacation. This is especially true when I am traveling with my husband or when I am meeting friends who are all foodies. Hopefully, once classes begin and my life returns to normal, I can get back to my dieting and workout and have my ideal weight back again.

We Took a Dip!

My daughter and I have been on a vacation for one week now. We did not have a good start though, no thanks to Cebu Pacific, but that horror story deserves another post. I am just happy that I have finally fulfilled my daughter’s longtime request to spend some time at the beach. I brought her beach where my best friend celebrated his birthday last year.

It is underdeveloped compared to the neighboring beaches which are complete with slides, pools with pool lifts, parks, restaurants, videoke and other facilities. However, we like it there because it is serene and clean. We can rest and waddle and take a dip sans the noise and crowd. We like the privacy that the place provides. The food tare also delectable and the staff, courteous.

Hopefully, we can return there before the year ends. My husband also loves the place and we are hoping to have him with us in our next beach trip.

A Great Present

This is a bitter-sweet-bitter season in my life and I am more than amazed to find words encouragement at unexpected places:

app_full_proxy.php

On this day, God wants you to know

... that it's time to start living in the present. Letting go of the past is not easy, especially if you have wounds that have never properly healed. But, the past is past and living there may be preventing you from fully experiencing the present. Likewise fear of what may be looming around the corner can also prevent you from fully enjoying the present. Live in the moment and look forward to eternity with God, now that's a great present.

R.O.B. Us!: The Ultimate OMF Lit Sale

>> Saturday, May 21, 2011

Some old friends and I were invited to a first birthday party of a friend’s son last week. Since I did not have enough time to scout for a gift, I resorted to a buying a book which I think is a safe choice. Moreover, it is a Bible story book for toddlers which is perfect for the birthday boy. An hour or so before boarding a bus that would take me to the metro, I visited my favorite bookstore, the OMF Lit in SM City in San Fernando.

There is an ongoing promo which has let me save a LOT in my book purchases. Aside from my gift for the birthday boy, I also grabbed some titles that I have been eyeing for some time. Also, I was able to buy some books for my husband and some friends. And to keep me preoccupied during my bus trip, I read one of the titles that I purchased which is all about proper management of personal financial resources. I was able to finish it before reaching my destination despite the noise made by two passengers on the adjacent seats. They were having an arugment on which rv insurance quote is the best. *sigh*

Anyway, going back. This ongoing OMF Lit promo is named

R.O.B Us (Raid Our Bookshop: Ultimate Sale) Forty-fied. It runs until May 31. Two hundred (200) titles are 40% off and all other books are discounted at 30%. Moreover, there in-store surprises. When I shopped there last week, I was asked to fill out a form that will qualify me for a raffle. (I hope I’ll win!).

Now let me share with you two of the titles that I bought which are at 40% off:

How to Read the Bible Book by Book
by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart. P 225   P 135

Description: This journey from Genesis to Revelation shows how key elements in Scripture fit into the bigger narrative of God's Word.
I find this as a perfect companion once I get back to my Bible-reading next month. I am very interested to know some historical facts and persons behind the books in the Bible and these are well-presented by this book. Orienting data, overviews, advices and walk through are provided for all books which makes Bible-reading for me more captivating.

Spirit-Controlled Temperament by Tim LaHaye. P250   P 150
Description: A helpful discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of a person's temperament.  Shows how the Holy Spirit helps a believer live above anger, fear, depression, and selfishness.
Temperaments and personalities have been fascinating for me. I guess that is inherent because of the nature of my work at the university for more than a decade. I have read and studied a lot of theories regarding the subject but this book is one of the easiest to understand. I started reading this book last night and I was very amused when I read about the temperament type that I have. Can you guess which one?

I am a Sanguine! I was resisting at first but as I kept on reading, I kept on saying, “Hey, that is very me!”. Yes, the book exposes the different strengths and weaknesses of the four temperaments. But what makes this book different from other books that cover the same topic is that it provides insights on how the Holy Spirit changes us and make us better sons and daughters of God. Yes, we are flawed in every humanly manner but this book confirms that yes, there is hope and that there is redemption.

Take advantage of this promo to stock up on good books. For a complete list of books which you can get at 40% off, click HERE.

E-books Instead of Text Books?

>> Thursday, May 12, 2011

School time is just around the corner and we have not enrolled our daughter yet. We still got plenty of time, the husband assured me. We even have not started shopping for some school supplies on our list to think that we are leaving for another trip next weekend. We will be going to the mall this weekend and I need to remind the husband about those school supplies.

We also need to shop for a new and bigger school bag too since our daughter will be taking more subjects (which means more books) this school year. How I wish that a time will come when their school utilizes e-books instead of the big, bulky and heavy paper books. That instead of scouting the malls for a durable bag, all I need to do is read laptop reviews to compare before buying a good one for my pupil.

Use of e-books is environment-friendly and good for my back too (because it is I who carries her heavy bag daily). Moreover, we all know how much textbooks cost these days. E-books, I think, are more cost-efficient. My friends shared that some schools in Manila have already tried using e-books in some of their subjects. I hope that other schools (including our daughter’s) can catch up and do the same. And soon!

A Timex Watch or an iPad 2?

Someone is celebrating his birthday very soon and as a birthday gift for his self, he wants to buy a very cool gadget. Initially, all he wanted was this:

Timex Ironman

The Timex Ironman Global Trainer Bodylink System. This GPS-enabled watch is for athletes who wish to track their pace, speed and distance. He asked me to canvass for this product at the malls but since I learned about how much a piece of this costs, I have been doing my best to discourage him and buy this instead:

iPad 2
Yes, an iPad 2. If he wants a cool gadget, this is the one. However, he has been very persistent. He already owns and iPhone and sees no use for an iPad. He insists that the watch can motivate him to get back into running again, which, I seriously doubt. It’s not that I don’t fully support him. It’s just I know him too well. ;)

For almost three weeks now, we have been exchanging notes. Once in a while he pops a question to help him make the decision. To quote “What is the compelling reason for me to buy an iPad 2?” Since it is him who has the answers to my life’s serious questions, doing his role is quite tough. But I think that it was so smart of me to think of an acceptable answer and that is, he can use an iPad for the two jobs he’s holding. And yeah, he’s buying it. My idea I mean. But no, he is not giving up on the Timex watch yet! So I came up with another idea. He go back to running and if after a month, he is able to sustain it, he can go for that watch and I will keep my mouth shut. Forever. :D

Happy, happy birthday to you!

SMC Corp

>> Monday, May 9, 2011

To help small business make it in the market, Abe Levine came up with a company named Specialty Merchandise Corporation or smc corp. This online business opportunity lets small businesses place their merchandise into one central warehouse. This lets businesses can focus on attracting more clients to earn more rather than wasting time on managing inventories and stocks. Thus, instead of hiring and training a sales team, it is the business owners who sell their products because like what Abe Levine believes, people tend to be more persistent and hardworking when they are working for their own business.

Despite its noble intentions, the company has faced some challenges. One of which involves smc scam. To answer the allegation, SMC has put up a comprehensive explanation. In addition to that, smc corp bbb reviews have shows that smc corp members are satisfied at how their businesses are growing without risking much.

My Date

Upon checking in on Facebook yesterday, I read that a friend of mine who lives nearby is looking for a movie date. It’s been a while since we last saw each other (plus I want to see Thor again) so I sent him a message that I was free and could go and watch it with him. We agreed to meet at a mall for some shopping, have lunch and then go to another mall for the movie.

He is the friend I can usually ask for beauty tips and advices as he is more vain compared to me. He even suggested some what he claims to be the best acne products he has tried when I complained about my nasty breakouts. Aside from the lunch and movie treat, he also helped me pick a good sunblock lotion since my daughter and I are going to hit the beach soon. Moreover, he helped me pick the right design and size of shorts for the little girl.

It was a great day spent with a great friend. Until next time, Roy! :)

Fruit Talk

Seeing me eat fruits delights the husband. It’s not that I do not like them. I just do not eat fruits in big proportions. Just enough. Knowing that I have this thing for sugar and sweets, he suggested that we also try hand dipped caramel apples soon. Very clever eh?

Anyway, last weekend, I was able to try and taste this fruit:

It’s a different variety of watermelon – a yellow one. Surprisingly, it tasted sweet! (What was I expecting, right? Hahaha!) A friend told me that she usually buys this kind of watermelon since it is sweeter than the red one.

Normal?

>> Tuesday, May 3, 2011

May is finally here and as much as I anticipate the coming of this month, I also dread it because it signifies the nearing end of our summer break. My daughter and I will be back to our normal routine very soon and I am not sure yet if I will be enrolling for another degree. The option to apply for some local jobs here is open too but I still can’t see myself working full time again any time soon. So there. Our normal for the upcoming school year is not final yet

It’s a good thing that we still have a month or so to enjoy the break and there is still a lot of time to contemplate on what to do with my time in the next school year. Wish me luck!
