14 Proven Stress Relievers

As parents, times of stress will come. Unfortunately, it’s easiest to take it out on the ones who are closest to you. While every parent has those days when they want to call in the movers, consider these proven stress relievers to help you come back to your senses.

  1. Take 15 minutes the night before and plan for your day. Make your lunch, set out your clothes and even prepare your breakfast to make the mornings a little easier.
  2. Make notes for yourself so you don’t forget important, or even unimportant, tasks.
  3. Kick procrastination to the curb; accomplish those tasks today.
  4. Make preventative maintenance part of your life. Use it for your home, your car and even your relationships to avoid breakdowns.
  5. Trash anything that doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. Putting up with an unreliable alarm clock or rigging your windshield wipers only add more stress.
  6. Give yourself 15 minutes extra when you arrive at appointments. After all, it could take that long to get your kid inside.
  7. Stock up on emergency supplies, diapers, postage stamps, toilet paper and other home staples.
  8. Get rid of high standards. It’s okay if the dishes aren’t done tonight… they’ll still be there tomorrow.
  9. Count your blessings.
  10. Say, “No.” Even the best activities may be too much to handle, even if it’s something involving your kids. Over-scheduling your day will create unnecessary stress.
  11. Focus your thoughts on understanding and loving others instead of being understood and being loved.
  12. Count to 1,000 before you do or say something that could hurt someone else’s feelings or complicate a situation.
  13. Do something to improve your appearance; it instantly helps you feel less stressed.
  14. Write down your feelings in a journal. You’ll enjoy reading the entries after some time has passed, and you may even decide to share some with your own children when they’re grown.
